Article 42

     1. National laws or regulations shall prescribe  the  time-limits
within  which the provisions of this Convention shall apply in respect
of -
     (a) the construction or equipping of a ship;
     (b) the construction or  equipping  of  any  shore-based  lifting
appliance or other cargo-handling appliance;
     (c) the construction of any item of loose gear.
     2. The  time-limits  prescribed  pursuant  to paragraph 1 of this
Article shall not exceed four years from the date of  ratification  of
the Convention.
